Burgeon Beer Co. - Keep It Simcoe IPA

Burgeon Beer from Carlsbad, CA has their Keep It Simcoe IPA available year-round. It's a 6.5% ABV danky IPA with intense hop flavors that don't overwhelm the palate. If we had to use one word to describe this beer, it would "IPA Hop Punch". Not as in a punch to the face, but more akin to an upfront hop explosion of flavor. It's not a drink-a-six-pack-and-I'm-fine-beer, as its alcohol content is quite high and the lack of bitterness makes it so easy to down a couple of cans much faster than one would like. However, it's definitely a let's-have-three-and-enjoy-the-waning-days-of summer kind of brew.

Appearance: Clear and straw colored. The traditional profile of an IPA. It creates an aromatic head that doesn't explode in a sea of foam when poured. The foam head isn't dense, and it doesn't linger once poured.

Smell: Hops, hops, hops. Hop if you like hops! If you like the smell and taste of hops, you'll like this one. The hops are so bright and pleasant, we'd buy a Simcoe air freshener for our home office space any day of the week.

Taste: Let's get down to it. If you're a hops person, then this beer will leave you with a smile on your face. Bright, dank hops with mostly pine come through in a wave of awesomeness with that first sip. It gives way to a very slight citrus resin at the end, but there's absolutely no bitterness. The intense hop flavor simply mellows out to nothing.

Marketing: Burgeon has some nice can art, as we've reviewed before. The art style on Keep it Simcoe doesn't disappoint. One look at the can, and you know what you're in for. Bright neon green, yup, that's what this beer tastes like.
